.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 228 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025

     Today through Tuesday...

Strong northerly winds in the post-frontal airmass will bring
winds of 30 to 40 mph across much of eastern Nebraska and
western Iowa this afternoon and evening. Deep mixing has helped
temperatures warm to near 50 immediately behind the front. This
evening and overnight tonight, temperatures will drop quickly,
with morning lows tomorrow morning in the single digits in
northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa, and in the lower teens
in southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska. There will also be low
chances (10 to 20 percent) for sprinkles/flurries across the
region this evening. Despite the strong forcing for ascent,
moisture is severely lacking with this system. As such, any
locations that receive flurries/light snow are not expected to
see any accumulations.

Several reinforcing surges of arctic air will bring dangerous
wind chills across the entire region this weekend and into the
beginning of next week. Morning wind chills of 15 to 25 below
zero are expected Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings. Tuesday
morning looks to be the coldest of the three, with the actual
air temperature dropping to 5 and 10 degrees below zero.

     Wednesday and Thursday...

An upper-level ridge is expected to build into the Great Plains
and Midwest on Wednesday. This will help temperatures rise above
freezing (mid and upper 30s) during the afternoon hours. Medium
range guidance heading into the end of next week depicts another
shortwave trough amplifying and diving south into the region
from Canada by Thursday. There are timing differences and
uncertainty with the magnitude of this disturbance. This may
bring another shot of colder air, potentially keeping the area
below freezing by the end of next work week. Despite the
uncertainty with timing and magnitude of this disturbance,
medium range guidance consistently shows a lack of moisture with
the system next week. As such, no precipitation is expected at
this time.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SUNDAY/...
Issued at 1130 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025

Potent wind gusts have persisted long in the evening ours today,
with the expectation that they could linger for a few more
before slowly diminishing overnight. Scattered MVFR ceilings
have also build in from the northwest but look less likely the
farther south and east you go. Nonetheless, KOMA and KOFK have a
portion of the early TAF period with ceiling restrictions while
KLNK is only expected to see them intermittently over the next
2-3 hours. Winds will stay out or the north-northwest through
the period with gusts falling to 22 kts or so by the end of it
alongside decreasing clouds.
